Welcome to a typical Monday in my life. There are a lot of computers involved, a lot of editing and a lot of talking. Early in the morning, in my first class, we talked about the tools required for reporting. We took a language and style practice assignment in which we rewrote redundant sentences into concise ones. Our professor says we must write at a sixth grade level, meaning everything must be simplified for everyone to understand.
"Do not use numerate," she says, "use many instead."
"It's not 'made an escape' or 'give encouragement to' or 'summoned to the scene' but escaped, encouraged, and called."
Being in charge of the media gives one a lot of power. There is no time for one to be misunderstood. Therefore... we say move instead of relocate and sue instead of will file a lawsuit. Everything must be short, sweet, and to the point.
For my second class we practiced our AP style. There is a weird high that I reach when we start practicing AP style. There are so many ways you can be right and you can be wrong and the only way to know is to have an AP style book in your hands at all times.
My last class included editing a podcast using Audience. The Au program makes me feel professional. In reality it is quite simple and fun to use.
To end my day, I finished some readings and got ready for a quiz on Wednesday and turned in my podcast project. I worked on a few writings for my online PR class and got settled in to video chat with Donny.
So far, I have worked with all sorts of media and I love every single medium. Despite the stress and the homework, I have a pretty great career. Trust me, writing for the media is way more fun than writing high school essays.
